Ridgeway Street, Liverpool-in Edge Hill?
« on: Monday 24 February 14 12:16 GMT (UK) »
I've just received the birth certificate for an ancestor born in 1890. The place of birth is stated as 42 Ridgeway Street which I believe no longer exists. However from Kelly's Street Directory for the period it seems it may have been in Edge Hill. Anybody know exactly where ?

According to The Genealogist website ----In 1891 there was a Ridgeway St in West Derby. Ecclesiastical Parish of St Cyprian.

I am not sure where Edge Hill is in relation to West Derby.

To stanmapstone and Pennines, thanks for the information. The actual birth certificate states "42 Ridgeway Street, West Derby " which I think applies to the old West Derby registration district rather than what Liverpudlians class as the suburb of West Derby today. St. Cyprian's Church is situated in Edge Hill.

If you go to http://maps.familysearch.org/ and enter West Derby in the search box, you can select "Civil Registration District" from the left hand list, and this will show the district as it was in 1851. You can see the history of the district at http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/west%20derby.html

Ridgeway Street ran off Wavertree Road but was demolished many, many years ago. It was the first street west bound after Botanic Road which is still there. There is a small housing estate on the site now. St Cyprian's Church is about half a mile a way on the junction of Edge Lane and Durning Road. It has been derelict for a long time but is soon to be converted to student accomodation.
