Help required in deciphering Liverpool street name (Place of death)
« on: Tuesday 25 February 14 08:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I was wondering if anyone might be able to decipher the place of death on this 1849 death certificate please?

As far as I can see it reads ’55 Chapel --alles’ (I simply cannot make out this second part of the address.

The informant, one Ann Pearson was resident at Collingwood Street, which was where Amelia herself was living prior to her death, and where her widowed husband lived after her death, so I have naturally been looking around the wider area of this part of Liverpool.

I’ve checked the available transcribed 1841/1851 census street indexes for all places starting with ‘Chapel’, but still can’t associate this last part on the death certificate with any of them.

Any help therefore would be much appreciated.

Chapel Ave
Chapel Gardens
Chapel Place
Chapel Rd
Chapel St, Bootle
Chapel St, Liverpool

the most likely would be Chapel Gardens ..??

Hi,

Meant to add, the death was registered in the St. Martin district of Liverpool.

I had found a few Chapel Courts too...

Do you think it reads Chapel Walks now or still undecided?

Hi Heywood,

Having just compared the address against other parts of the certificate, I think perhaps it could be 'Chapel Walks', as elsewhere on the certificate letter stems appear to be detached from the second part of the letter in various instances - the 'p' in Liverpool and the 'k' in Watch Maker.

Also, what could be the 'W' is poorly formed, the 'W' elsewhere looking like a 'U'...

That's my detailed assessment further to everone elses contributions!!!  :)

Additionally,

Chapel Walks is within the same Census Piece No - 2176 as Collingwood Street, and therefore was within the general area I was expecting to find her.

That's what I thought  :)

It looks to be 55 Chapel Walks but I looked at 1851 and there is no numbering system  :(
