WSRO reference
« on: Wednesday 26 February 14 07:24 GMT (UK) »
Its quite a simple request, but I found the WSRO On Line Index so difficult to use that I am hoping there is a Rootschat member who is more gifted in navigating it.

Many years ago (pre Internet) I visited WSRO and looked up their holdings for West Grinstead.
Amongst the records held was an excise book containing sketches and transcripts of the texts on the many West Grinstead gravestones that have since been removed.  I abstracted my own ancestral information from it but failed to make a note of the reference at the time.

I have now recommended that same book to a fellow researcher in the USA who also has an interest in the early monumental inscriptions in the same cemetery, so would be most grateful if a fellow Rootschatter could let me know the WSRO index for it.

I was there last week and had the wrong details needed as I had not realised that you have to click on the blue number on the left of the entry for full reference details on their online index.   I agree it is not easy to navigate.

Level    Item
CatalogueNo    MP 4117
Title    List of graves in the churchyard of Our Lady of Consolation and St. Francis, West Grinstead
Date    1996
RefNo    Click here to see the entire catalogue for this record

It was on the last of 23 pages for West Grinstead.   Is this it?   Might be better searching on the A2A site.

Thanks for the info sillgen but I dont think that can be it.
The parish church in West Grinstead is St Georges.  Furthermore my visit to WSRO pre dated a 1996 document.  (unless thats a WSRO typo for 1896)  The one I recall was compiled circa 1900.

There are a lot of St George's entries but none looked like a list of monumental inscriptions.

I think the CD I bought with West Grinstead MI's has the right reference.

Para 95/7/9 Transcript of the gravestones 1696-1931

Does that ring a bell?

THANKS SO MUCH, that would seem to be more like it.
My personal visit was obviously prior to them making a CD of that particular item in their holdings. How times change.
