Query about Baptism records
« on: Friday 28 February 14 18:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi

While chasing up baptsim records, I've come across one for 1825 which adds the words "was received into the church" under the fathers occupation.  The couple in question had already had 6 children previously baptised in that particular church over the course of about 15 years.  Does anyone have any idea a) whether this note relates to the child being baptised, or to one of the parents & b) what it means?

Many thanks

The baptism service consists of two parts, the baptism itself and the public receiving of the infant before the congregation at a service in the church as a member of Christ’s flock. As The Prayer Book says if a child is baptised privately, and if such children " do afterwards live", they ought to be brought to the Church as soon as possible to be received as members of " the flock of true Christian people".

Hi Stan

So this could mean that the child was baptised privately because it may have been thought she wouldn't live, but as she did she was then brought into the church as soon as feasibly possible afterwards?

That is what it usually means, but there should be a note in the register about the private baptism, which is sometimes marked with 'P'
