Does anyone live near Dinton,Salisbury?
« on: Sunday 02 March 14 06:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I live in Oz and am helping a friend who is researching his Pomeroy family in England.
His father came to Oz in 1926 and his address on the Passenger List was Pound Cottage,Dinton,Salisbury

His father was then 16 years of age and came here unaccompanied. He never spoke of his family in England, so it is a mystery to us as to why he would come here.

We would really like to know whether Pound Cottage was then a farm or perhaps school? Also is it still there?

Any help appreciated

Theres still a Pound Cottage,Hindon Rd Dinton.listed in property info as large detached, last sold in 1996.This road is a current mix of old and new,so could be still there.
Perhaps older children were boarded there in 1920s,school or institution. The telephone directory too may help, and Electoral Rolls if any.Salisbury Library may be able to point you in the right direction.
I am not far away and will go and see if the house is still there,in next few days. Another thing is that WW1,army camps were situated all through this area, mainly commonwealth soldiers.Brionne.

Yes,thats the place,Listed so name unchanged.
The guys family are at Orchard Terrace Dinton,1911.expect you have this.

The image[FindMyPast]of sailing Largs Bay,London to Sydney 24 August 1926,gives following address, for Sydney Pomeroy.
Pount Cottages,Dinton,Salisbury,age 16 single,boxmaker.
Interestingly he is travelling with,Jack Dukes,23,chauffeur,address given,Avon View,Stratford Sub Castle,Salisbury, the booking numbers for these two men are,14824,and 14825 respectively,so obviously made at same time. Brionne.

Thanks everyone.

I will pass all this on to my friend who I am sure will be a pleased as I am.

You are correct, Brionne, we do have the information from the 1911 Census and also the details from the passenger list, but I don't think that I can access the English electoral rolls or the phone books from here in Oz.

Also, I didn't realise that the booking numbers for the Largs Bay passengers indicated when the bookings were made. That is very handy information to have for future research on other families. We have assumed that Sidney's parents were still in Dinton in 1926 and that is why we wanted to know why Sidney was living in Pound Cottage if his family was also in Dinton.

Since I put my post on I have found newspaper articles here in Oz for the arrival of the Largs Bay 1926 voyage with Sidney aboard stating that there were 30 "Little Brothers" aboard. Checking this revealed that the "Big Brother Movement" brought out a lot of teenage boys and placed them on farms in Oz. The Big Brother Movement has offices out here, so we are in the process of asking them to please check their archives for Sidney.

Now I am also wondering if perhaps one of our Soldiers based in the area might have been befriended by the Pomeroy family, and Sidney came out to live with them?  Or perhaps Jack Dukes looked after him on the trip?

As I said, Sidney never spoke of his English family and until his son began researching he never knew that Sidney had siblings in England. We now know there were several (all dead now of course)and we wondered if Sidney didn't want to come to Oz, but was sent anyway. Or maybe he had an argument with his father and left?

The link to the Grade ll listing is excellent, however I can't seem to get an image of the house. I'll keep trying - must be there somewhere. ::)

Typical genealogical research - one answer leads to more questions.

Thanks once again. If you can go and have a look Brionne we will be looking forward to your information.

Sidney's son will be really pleased to get the Grade ll Listing information.

A bit more, the guy Jack Dukes came from the Wyndham Arms pub across the road from Pound Cottage in Hindon Rd Dinton,1911,his father was the Publican.[Jack working at Stratford Sub Castle Salisbury 1926]more of his family ran another one in same village,East End Inn.
So thats the connection between the two men going to Aus together, would imagine.
Have been across there this morning, looks as if Pound Cottage is still there, now I know right spot,/house,but did not stop and get out and have real good look.Worried in case some thought I was up to no good. Will try again another time.
My dog had a good walk in Dinton Park,so not a wasted journey.

By the way Jack vincent Dukes died age 32,in 1935 ,Portland Victoria,Aus.
