James in 1861 shows some of the travels of the family. Transcriber couldn't read double s

W. A. Turnpike Rd Cap Coch RG9/4071 folio 17 pg 34
James Gillgrass head mar 31 coal miner b. Berkshire, Whokingham
Sarah wife 31 b. Staffordshire
James son 8 b. Berkshire, Maidenhead
John son 6 b. Somerset, Burton
Joseph son 4 b. Glam, Aberdare
Walter son 2 b. Aberdare
Mary Phillips 28 house servant b. Aberdare

If Richard/Thomas was older than later census entries suggested, he may already be in lodgings by 1861. Although his parents would have been very young at this birth, if ages on 1861 are correct.

do you have a copy of the marriage cert from Richard's first marriage? His age may be more accurate on that. 1850/1 birth looks unlikely given date of the marriage.

Richard Gilgrose dec qtr 1866 Pontypridd vol 11a pg 479 with Ann Beynon on the same page

OK, found it, he shows as 21, residence for both was Mountain Ash.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JV36-4B9

Richard signed as Richard Gillgrass, Ann made her mark.

If he was born in Banbury in 1848, it looks as though the birth wasn't registered. Do you know his mother's maiden name from the birth cert of one of the other children? If he was born before his parents' marriage, he could be registered with her maiden name.

John Gillgrass sept qtr 1854 Wincanton vol 5c pg 526
Joseph Gillgrass sept qtr 1856 Merthyr Tydfil vol 11a pg 358
Walter Gillgrass sept qtr 1859 Merthyr Tydfil vol 11a 369

Haydon, it is much better if you link all the threads so that everyone can see what has been found previously. Saves wasting hours duplicating census and other information.

There are several threads on Gillgrass family - here are a few  ::) The family of James Gillgrass seem to end up in the USA by 1881 -
