Looking for info regarding
« on: Monday 03 March 14 22:51 GMT (UK) »
George McCauley (no dates, 1800s) and (wife’s name unknown) - my great great grandfather
He was supposed to own a farm in Drumquin which in 1991 was still owned by the Verner family. Their records indicate that their father bought the farm in 1905 from a Mr. and Mrs. Colhoun, (Mrs Calhoun was Margaret McCauley-maiden name). He also owned a ship and it is believed that he emigrated to Australia leaving the farm to his daughter (Margaret). A thought has been presented that they originated from Paisley, Glasgow, Scotland and came to Ireland on a land grant from the Duke of Abercorn. This has yet to be confirmed. Information from various family members.
Children: 2, George and Margaret
Margaret: married a Mr. Colhoun from Strabane. None of their children married and are long gone. The Colhouns sold the farm to the Verners in 1905. This information came from Mr. Ernest Verner, 1991 owner, and his sister Mrs. Edith McKinley of Omagh via exchange of letters and private visits to the farm in 1989 and 1990.
George (??/??/?? - ??/??/??) married *Ellen Minmaugh (1833-1914)
George’s family was not Catholic and he was disowned for marrying Ellen. However general feeling is that he had become a Catholic before the ceremony.
*Ellen Minmaugh (Nellie) Mimeugh or Mimieux and Mimnagh: Died in March 1914 in Invaugh at the age of 81 years of bronchitis and this was reported to the authorities by Hugh McNulty. This information was obtained from a copy sent by Social Security office in Belfast. From this we can conclude that she was born around 1833 and as the first child was born in 1863 the difficulty arises in documenting anything else about her. Dromore has been mentioned as her family residence. The widow McCauley (or McAuley – there seems to be a variation on the spelling and both names have come up in the correspondence with officials and church records that are available) kept her family going by running a grocery store in Newtownstewart which her son John operated, assisted by his sister Kate at the week-ends. This information came via comments from Kate in that she had to walk eight miles between the house and the store, It is likely that all of the family participated, to some degree, in the family business. A van type store, drawn by a horse named Jenny, was also operated by the eldest son and covered all the surrounding areas (circa:1895). From this time on little information has been handed down as some of the family moved to Scotland/America within the next decade with the remaining members following in 1914. Ellen McCauley was known as “Ma McCauley” as she had the reputation of being involved in helping neighbors and acting as a sort of mid-wife.
Verivication of any of the above information or additional info would be appreciated.

First of all there is a Dromore in Co Down  Northern Ireland which I first assumed was where you were taking about, which is about 25 miles south from Belfast Northern Ireland , but then you mention Newtownstewart which is in Co Tyrone and there is a Dromore in Co Tyrone  Northern Ireland too.

Have you checked on the 1901 and 1911 census which covers Ireland and Northern Ireland, where you will also find the images of the census so you can download those as copies of real records as you may find some more details on them http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/ I see Ellen on the 1911  26 EnvaghBaronscourt, Co Tyrone ( just checked 75 yrs old living with family( Hugh and Bridget McNulty), RC, you can also see the images of the House and Building Return....and in the 1901 head, 65yrs  living at 52 Main Street Newtown Stewart, Tyrone Northern Ireland and Kate is in the houshold too along with two siblings, a niece and two boarders

Bridget McNulty was Ellen's daughter as was Kate who emigrated to New York City where she worked as a house maid for the Tiffany (famous jewelers) family the rest of her life. She was a spinster.
Margaret McCauley of Antrim is not so easily connected.

This may or may not be anything at all to do with the family you are looking for as they were RC, although as you say there could be mixed marriage, so I looked  for McCauley on both the Covantant and Declaration  at PRONI ( Northern Ireland National Archives)  in Tyrone: North is a Maggie address Creaghan district of Donemana Co Tyrone and by clicking on signature again you can see and have the image, there are 3 in Tyrone: South and 3 in Tyrone: East and of course you can check all the other districts too as well as checking for other surnames

http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/search_the_archives/ulster_covenant.htm
"The Ulster Covenant was part of a response by Ulster Unionists( protestants)  to the efforts of successive Westminster governments to settle the running sore of the 'Irish Question' by giving Ireland a limited measure of local autonomy known as 'Home Rule'.
The archive of the Ulster Unionist Council, held by the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI), contains just under half a million original signatures and addresses of the men who, on 28 September 1912, signed the Ulster Covenant, and of the women who signed the parallel Declaration. In total, the Covenant was signed by 237,368 men, and the Declaration by 234,046 women."

If the family rented from  the Marquis of Abercorn, then the time 1900-1926 may give you some idea of what Northern Ireland was like at that time
http://www.irishhistorylinks.net/Historical_Documents/ThisGeneration.html

Unfortunately one of the big commerical websites have and are buying up many NI/Irish websites which used to offer free searches and transcriptions in Ireland and Northern Ireland, so you click on a link and it takes you directly to their commercial site  now and it doesn't seem like they are using the information, so I can only assume they are 'stock piling' while buying more and it will end up on their '.ie' site version with another subscription for people to pay if they want to see it

One of my grandfathers siblings married a Slavin.
Ellen McCauley (b.1865): married Barney Slavin. They had nine children, all whom were born in Ireland. They moved to Pollokshaws (Glasgow, Scotland) around 1914.
