So, if you have your father in law's likely parents names, you also have the likely names of the parents of HIS siblings  :) that likely went to America.

Were they naturalised? Their naturalisation certificate should give place of birth.

I have a pretty extensive family tree originated from a Charles Ott that emigrated to the US from the Baden Wurrtemburg area of southern Germany. What part of the country did they come from?

Sorry for the very late reply.  My husband and his father were both born in Reutlingen, Germany.
