Hi

I am writing short bios for the men on the War Memorial of the small village in Hampshire, where I was born. With only one left to do he is the hardest to find.

He was 6188 Private Harry Williams of the 1st Battalion. His medal card says he was awarded the 1914 Star and clasp, The British Medal and The Victory Medal.

His entry on the CWGC site says he died on 1st November 1914 aged 48 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial. His wife lived near Farnham Surrey.

From his age I am guessing that he was a regular soldier prior to the war but I cannot find him on any Census and there are 3 Henry[Harry] Williams in the Farnham area in 1911 but none are soldiers.

I have looked at lots of websites for the Regiment but all have the same info as above.

Does anyone have any ideas of further places that I can search given that I live in Australia.

Thanks
Vic Wise

Other vital pieces of information show his birthplace as Southwick, Middlesex, he was son of a Henry George Williams, and his wife was named Edith.   His name is also given as Harry Henry Williams but suspect he may have been born plain Henry and was known as Harry.

Just a thought but if he served in 1914 then he was either a regular or a former soldier who was called up as a reservist and, given his age, the latter might be a possibility? If so then I suppose that would explain why he wouldn't show as a soldier in the census?

One more piece of information from CWGC: his widow Edith lived at Hale Road in Farnham.

Southwick - is that the village in Hampshire ? I don't know of any place of that name in Middlesex.

That would make sense but why would he be on the war memorial of a small village in Hampshire? And which village is it? Ewshot?

Looking at the map, Ewshot is fairly close to Upper Hale Road in Farnham so that might explain things.
