James Bett - did he die in Binghampton, N.Y.? ***COMPLETED ***
« on: Thursday 06 March 14 21:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I'm struggling to find the death of James Bett who was born 09 Jun 1888 in 34 East Forth Street, Cellardyke, Parish of Kilrenny, Fife, Scotland.  He married ANNA E ROYCE, daughter of SETH ROYCE and MARTHA QUINLAN.  She was born Abt. 1889 in New York, USA, and died 21 May 1947 in Binghampton, Broome County, New York, USA.

The latest I have for James is the 1920 Fourteenth Census of the United States where he is residing at 7 Merrick Street, Binghampton, Broom County, New York with Anna.  (He was a successful Painter and Decorator)

I found a 'strange' Funeral Notice for Anna, in "Binghampton Press" New york, USA : Wednesday 28 May 1947 which read:
"De GRAFF - The funeral of Mrs. Anna Bett DeGraff will be held at the J F. Rice Funeral Home. 130 Main St., Johnson City. Saturday at 10 a. m. The Rev. H. W. Thomas will officiate, assisted by the Rev. George Howe. Burial will be in Floral Park Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home."  (I also have her Obituary from "Binghampton Press" New york, USA : Wednesday 28 May and Thursday 29 May 1947)

This got me searching further until I discovered a report of her marriage to Dorr DeGraff on 29 Oct 1932 at the Main Street Baptist Church in Binghampton, Brooke County, New York, USA.

I'm assuming therefore that James may have died between 1920 and 1932 but I can't find any trace.

Can someone help please?

Regards

Thanks for the replies Sandra ... here we go again  ;)

Your information narrows his possible death down to between 1925 and 1927.

I've searched nearly all day on the Old Fulton NY Post Cards and picked up a lot of information, but no Death or Funeral Notice or Obituary

There is a library that will do look-ups in the New York death index.  This post gives more information - http://www.unyg.com/blog/index.php/2008/03/new-york-state-vital-records-microfiche-indexes-update/

Also, keep in mind that sometimes women proclaimed themselves to be widows when they were really separated/divorced/abandoned.
