Newspaper look up - Westmoreland Gazette Nov/Dec 1947
« on: Tuesday 11 March 14 16:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I hope someone may be able to help. Is anyone able to access copies of the Westmoreland Gazette for late November/December 1947 at a local library or local studies archive? I live in Oxfordshire, and the paper doesn't seem to be available online to view anywhere.

I am looking for information on a German POW who died in November 1947 and was buried at St. Ninian's churchyard. There may be a reference in a newspaper of the period as it appears he died in an accident. It is a bit of a mystery and I've been in contact with the church and their records do not have any more details.

If anyone can help I'd be pleased to hear from you!

Many thanks

The only church dedicated to St Ninian in Westmorland, so far as I know, is at Brougham and in fact this is the only one in the whole of Carlisle Diocese. When you say you have contacted the church, is it the one at Brougham.

St Ninian's, Brougham, or more correctly Ninekirks, is now redundant and is extremely remote i.e. you have to park, then cross about seven fields on foot before coming to the church on the banks of the River Eamont.

If this is the church then the newspaper that covers that area is the Cumberland and Westmorland Herald or the now defunct Penrith Observer. The Westmorland Gazette covers South Westmorland.

Names would help.
Forster Cul, Harrison Cul, Wood Cul Yks, Castley Cul & Wes, Lorimer Cul and Perth,Innis Cul, Casson, Cul, Johnston,Cul & Nfk, Carruthers Cul, Ewart Cul, Jardine Cul & Dmf, Story Cul, ONeill Cul & NI, Davis Cul & Ldn,

Hi

Thanks for your message. I've recently been able to find the information - kindly located in the paper you mention by a local historian (Westmoreland Gazette was my error).

Yes, it was Brougham that I had been in contact with.
