Smart Family
« on: Wednesday 12 March 14 04:32 GMT (UK) »
Would like to determine the surname of a female in our family line. John Brown states he was born Cowlinge (suffolk) abt 1795 in 1851, married to Elizabeth, born abt the same year Cowlinge. No marriage found, but family story is they were devout. Live Walthamstow, Essex, England, he is a husbandman, they christen a daughter Jane Smart Brown at St. Mary parish there in 1821. Oddly, Smart and 'dr' is added to the baptismal record in a slightly different hand from the rest, appearing different from other entries who do not have a dr designation. Elizabeth and John in Walthamstow from then, new question if they may have married in Tower Hamlets, or other part of London, between 1818 and 1822 due to new information about a Thomas Smart who married at Tower Hamlets. John Brown died between 1851 and 1861 in Walthamstow. Jane, might have died 1865 if anyone has access to the workrecords, she died in Union House, Walthamstow. Thomas Smart, possibly married to a Sarah Brown from Cowlinge may have moved to Walthamstow as well in the early part of the 1800's. Thanks for any tips, Jan

I am a little confused by your post ??? However I think you are trying to find the name of the wife of a John Brown born c1795 Cowlinge Suffolk, her first name Elizabeth.

The Bishops records would be a good starting point and to this end the URL is under.

I am totally unfamiliar with the counties and towns so I will leave it up up to you to search

Sorry for any confusion. A marriage of Elizabeth Jolly and John Brown in Cowlinge is a possibility. They had a daughter they named Jane Smart Brown (1821) in Walthamstow which caused me to wonder where Smart came from.Sarah Smart married to Thomas Smart might be a Brown from Cowlinge, though married in London. John Brown's brother Thomas Brown christened one son Thomas Smart Brown in Cowlinge in 1841. Any suggestions are welcome, re the Smart surname and why it might have happened. Thanks

Thank you, I thought that possible, but the only adoption I have seen in baptisms (whilst looking for something else) was very specific about it being an adoption. Last night I found another odd record from Walthamstow, on family search LDS a marriage is transcribed as William Brown b. 1870, his father James Smart Brown, marrying Sarah Ann Lord at St. michael's parish in 1897. I have not looked at this actual marriage record but would be interested in the details. Possibly a coincidence. J

Thank you for looking this up. for the moment, this Smart name appears to be a different family according to your message as we have no known links.
Still not sure of the meaning of Smart surname in our family, but perhaps there is someone who is willing to look up the Smarts of Walthamstow (chapel end?) to see if a tie is there between the Brown family and them. J
