Hengoed, Glam
« on: Friday 14 March 14 11:07 GMT (UK) »
1861 census shows David Morgan, age 48, coal miner, born Bedwellty, Mon.
He is living at 'Cwrt Y Bettin', Hengoed, Gelligaer.
Can anyone pinpoint where Cwrt y Bettin is / was, please?
RG9/4046/49/pages 5 & 6.
Thank you,
Rob

if you go back a page, the previous property mentioned is Rhos yr Yrfa. This still exist and is north west of Penpedairheol (east of Heol Adam). The next is Plough and Harrow - also still exists in Penpedairheol - CF82 8BQ. Presumably Cwrt y Bettin was a group of houses somewhere between the two

have now found it on an 1870s map on the old maps site - as Cwrt y Betty, it's on the Nant y Cascade, roughly where Hospital Road and Tai'r Heol now stand

Excellent,
thanks very much Mabel & Doran54.
So it's Betty's Courtyard? wonder who she was?

Mabel,
I can see the location on the map, should I be able to see the photograph on the Coflein link?

Many thanks for your help,
Rob

Hi Rob, if you google Hospital Road Penpedairheol, then look for Duffryn Close, from that junction to your right there is a roundabout at the end of Rhos Avenue, from there go north to the Hospital road again, that little corner was Cwrt Y Betty, where there was a farm house and barns, as far as I know the fields where Duffryn Close is now also belonged to this farm.
Best wishes Rowley
