Hi Crowlie,
You may want to ask the mod to move this into the photograph thread. I'm sure someone there could help.
Researching: Cronin / Nolan - Gortadrislig, Kerry
Finn/Clifford - Callinafercy and Scort, Kerry
Spillane - Milltown
Also:- Byrne / Tyrrell - Dublin

Hi Bob,

I've started trying to improve the image for you, but before I go any further (because I'm stuck) I'm wondering if you have the details (and dates) but just want the image improving? I'm struggling with the year of death for CHARLES TURKINGTON. I can read 18th April 18.. The last digit possibly a seven.

The details on the grave I can read are (I believe):

TURKINGTON
IN LOVING MEMORY OF
CHARLES TURKINGTON WHO DIED 18TH APRIL 18..
ALSO HIS BELOVED WIFE MARGARET
WHO DIED 30TH APRIL 1853
ALSO THEIR BELOVED SON SAMUEL
....
BLESSED ARE THE DEAD WHICH DIE IN THE LORD. REV. 13-14

There are two more lines above the bible verse, it's very difficult to make out but, I'd say BELOVED SON SAMUEL
Incidentally, the Bible verse is Revelations 14:13 not REV. 13-14 as was chiseled so I'm sure the stonemason had a bit of a hard time about that, after finishing the whole stone, or let's hope nobody noticed.

Trystan

(Below, I've started restoring it up to the word Charles so far!)

Hi trystan,
Thanks very much for your help, I have some of the information but I was also hoping for the image to be improved.
What I have is Charles Turkington died 19th April 1947 and Margaret d 30th April 1953.
It was the last piece I couldn't manage. It could be Samuel, their eldest son was a Samuel.
Two weeks ago I was in N Ireland and found the grave.
The Bible verse is interesting, thanks again for your help.
The condition of the headstone misleads the age of it.

I'll keep at it then - I'll probably have it ready tomorrow. I'm  doing it letter by letter.

The 9s look very like 8s, but it must have just been the style that the stonemason had.

Yes, I'm quite confident that it is Samuel.

The line below that is not legible at all, but presumably would have given the date of his death.

It's good that you found the grave when you went over there.  :)

Here you go Bob,

I've restored the lettering stone - hopefully it's a bit clearer now for you.

There is still one line completely obscured, however it might be a good excuse to go and visit Northern Ireland again.

All the best,
Trystan
