1891 Census - WOODARD
« on: Wednesday 26 March 14 17:08 GMT (UK) »
This is my very first post on Rootschat so bear with me if I do anything wrong!!

I am looking for the Woodard family in Durham in the 1891 census.  Alice Caroline Woodard married my great grandfather James Purves in June 1891 in Esh, Durham.  Her father was Josiah also known as Joseph.  The Woodard family originated from Peasenhall, Suffolk.  In the 1881 census the family are living in Esh Winning, Durham, the same village as Alice's husband-to-be, so I am sure they would still have been living there at the time of the 1891 census just before Alice's wedding.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Hi and a warm welcome to Rootschat!

Could you tell us Alice's year and place of birth? I can see an Alice in Durham but she was bn Yorkshire?
Likewise Josiah/Josephs - I can see one bn Peaseenhill, but he is still in Suffolk not Durham. But without an idea of age I dont know if he is worth a second look!
Who else is in the family you are looking for? Any more names with approx ages? E.g did Josiah have a wife? Children other than Alice?

Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Looking at 1901 Census, Josiah was born 1842 Peasenhall, wife Rose Anne born 1844 Herefordshire. There are four chldren on this census, Robert born 1871 Peasenhall, John born 1873 Peasenhall, Rose A born 1881 Esh Winning, Clara L born 1887 Eshwinning.

1881 census is a bit of a scribble:
Josiah is down as Joseph, Roseanne is written as Roosanne. Other children are George born 1865, London. Joseph, born 1867 Rockell? Suffolk and Alice born 1872 Rockell? Suffolk.

Thanks for those replies sgf28, you got there before me!  I also have a copy of Alice's marriage certificate dated 16 June 1891.  Alice's residence is given as Esh Winning, her father's name is Josiah (a coke drawer by occupation) and one of the witnesses is Josiah Woodard jnr.

Looking at it again I don't think it is your Alice. She seems to be the daughter of a robert and Mary Woodard

I think the census pages are missing.

I searched for missing pages Esh and saw this post elsewhere. It is the same street as your family in 1881.

Thanks so much for the replies.  Heywood seems to have hit the mark with the old post regarding the missing pages for East Terrace, Esh Winning.  That post refers to the pages being missing from the Durham County Records Office and mentions the Public Records Office in London.  Does this mean that the pages could be missing only from Durham but still exist elsewhere or have some pages been totally lost?
