Also  if your father abandoned him, as you say in your first post, he may not have kind feelings towards you and yours. Not just your feelings here. He may have a step father, who raised him. He may have been told his biological father died. He may not be using the name he was born with. There are any number of complications here.
I have a friend in a similar position and she has put her name on a register, so her half brother can find her if he wishes. He was, however, adopted out of the family.
