THOMAS MCCARTHY WENT TO CANADA IN 1820?
« on: Sunday 30 March 14 19:48 BST (UK) »
???  Thomas McCarthy was born in Ireland in 1772, married Bridget Casey who was born in 1774 and came to Canada with their children, among the children was another Thomas, born in Ireland 1812.  They all died in Canada, in Quebec.  Thomas Senior in 1866 and his son in 1878.  Young Thomas married Catherine Wilson from Longford, Ireland  (in 1835 in Quebec).  However, what townland, what county, where do they come from.  Please help to find where these people originated.  Thank you.

Hi,
It was much cheaper to travel to Canada. The British shipping regulations were much more lax than those for America so owners of ships to Canada could really pack their ships with emigrants and charge less. The ships were used to bring timber from Canada and were then basically  converted to carry people. They became known as "coffin ships".

On Ancestry, I have found several Thomas McCarthys travelling to Canada in the 1820s.  Two which looked interesting were both in 1826.  One Thomas was travelling with a family of 4, the other was with a family of 5.

There is no further information as to who was in the family as only the 'primary immigrant' was named but it might be worth checking out - if nothing else it will discount them.

Below is the reference they give and both Thomas' will appear on page 17.

Spillane - Milltown
Also:- Byrne / Tyrrell - Dublin

My husband's McCarthy's came from Ireland to also Canada via St. Lawrence River. Interesting that it was cheaper to go into Canada vs. USA. In fact, our Patrick McCarthy 'was born' at sea in the St. Lawrence River in 1870 so his marriage record says from Bay City, Mich. The conditions traveling sound awful to Canada. Thanks for the information.
