West Riding Family History Society?
« on: Wednesday 02 April 14 01:46 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone advise me please if there is a Family History Society which covers the whole West Riding area?

I've tried Googling for the West Riding Family History Society which I think I contacted a good number of years ago but nothing that comes up rings a bell.

Thanks.

I cannot think of a West Riding Family History Society but you could be thinking of the West Yorkshire Archives.

There's a list of Yorkshire FHS here:

Anything ring a bell?

Could you be thinking of the WEST-RIDING mailing list at Rootsweb?

Yorkshire Roots FHS is a generalised society for West Yorks -- but there are also Huddersfield Family History Society
http://www.hdfhs.org.uk/

which is excellent.

And Calderdale  FHS
http://www.cfhsweb.com/web/

It depends where the main focus of your ancestry lies -- but I suggest you look at the websites, which will give you details of the areas covered.

Hi all,

Thanks to all who replied.

KGarrad, thanks, I note a couple of people with Sturdy interests on the Yorkshire FHS site you mentioned, i will send emails to them, fingers crossed.

Dalum, thanks but the "WEST-RIDING mailing list at Rootsweb" wasn't what I had in mind.

What I was hoping was to find a society which covered members who have interests West Riding wide, rather than just parts of West Riding, unfortunately I can find no clues which could give me an idea where to look for Oswald and I can't afford to commission a researcher to search numerous parishes in the hope of finding at least Oswald's marriage.

My aim is to try and locate anyone who might be researching my Sturdy family and had better luck than I have had, or perhaps someone who has come across the marriage of Oswald Sturdy circa 1735.  My problem is I have no idea where to look and there seems to be a lack of records I can access from Australia, I have checked Family Search, Free Reg, Ancestry.com plus made posts on several Genealogy Forums, all to no avail.

The info I have so far is:-

Baptisms at Nun Monkton for the children of Oswald Sturdy.
Oswald and Thomas both baptised 21 July 1736.
Susanna 25 June 1739.
Elizabeth 21 November 1743.
Oswald senior's wife not named in the Baptism Register.

Sturdy burials at Nun Monkton.
Thomas 25 July 1726.
Oswald 6 March 1742.
The occupations of both were stated to be Gardener, no additional details given, I suspect Thomas might be Oswald's father.

The baptisms came originally from the IGI and were later confirmed by a West Yorkshire researcher I commissioned, the researcher additioally found the above burials but could not find Oswald’s marriage at Nun Monkton.

Susanna married my ancestor William Adams in 1766 at Great Waltham Essex, an Elizabeth Sturdy was a witness.

The only other info I have is that:-
1) An Oswald Sturdy is buried in Tadcaster, he died 23 Jan 1815 (from a headstone), I believe he is Oswald senior's son.
2) Two daughters of a Thomas Sturdy were baptised in Nun Monkton, Elizabeth 28 Feb 1691 and Jane 7 Feb 1696, this info from Family Search batch C061232.

Next month I will be 80 years of age and whilst I’m in pretty good shape at the moment, time is running short, I am desperate to have at least Oswald’s marriage so I can at last record the name of the children’s mother and start preparing to hand over copies of our Family Tree and Family Group Sheets to my kids.

Regards.
