Thomas Cecil Chaplin Toon
« on: Saturday 05 April 14 15:57 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any information about the circumstances surrounding the death of Thomas Cecil Chaplin Toon in 1878 (I think 5th August) when he was "willfully murdered" in Stamford?

I would also like to know about the circumstances of the death of his brother, George Peter Toon who died in the Crown Hotel, Stamford in 1888.

I am interested in any information regarding the Toon family in Stamford.

Thanks - Amanda Stone.

Hello

There is a news report of it (behind a paywall!)...it was a fight over a debt of £1s 9d owed from Thomas to the accused - a labourer called Martin Cummins - and Thomas was thrown over a bridge into water.

It was 5th August 1878 and its reported in the Gloucester Citizen and a couple of others

George Peter Toon seemed to have been in trouble himself ten years previously (26 October 1878) - he was fined 6d for assaulting a B Barlow.  Mr Barlow had gone 'blackberrying' with George's wife and bought her a beer.   Reported in the Lincolnshire Chronicle.

Can't see anything for George Peter save there is a  brief obit that he died 'suddenly'

The Bristol Mercury and Daily Post, November 8 1878

The trial of Martin Cummins (aged 19) is reported in the above newspaper. The jury found Cummins guilty of manslaughter, the judge passed a sentence of life imprisonment.
