So the 1889 Nottingham birth looks hopeful. I will have another look on censuses now that we have parent's names for George Whitby. 

added: I remember seeing a George Child in 1911 who was a grocer (hence my question about George's occupation), which may fit in fairly well with him being a fruiterer in Australia. I will see what else I can find. We are not allowed to do lookups from the 1911 census, but you can glean quite a lot from the free index.

This is curious. I have found a George H Child born Leeds, with wife Ada and family living in Bermondsey in 1891, but no son George with them.

Ada is born Nottingham so a connection to your George's birth place.

They have children Arthur aged 3 (which is the age George Whitby should be) and William 9 months, both born Nottingham. I wonder if Arthur is George?
