Postal Workers/ mine workers Johannesburg
« on: Monday 07 April 14 07:29 BST (UK) »
Hi there

Am wondering if there were any records kept of employees for either the Postal Service or the mines in Johannesburg.

Am searching for any info I can find on the following:

Harold (Harry) Hanks:
b circa 1865... He was the manager of a mine in South Africa between roughly 1895 and 1909.  He may have been an engineer.  He regularly traveled between SA and the UK.

Harold's wife Agnes had a son from a previous marriage named William John STANTON who worked in the Post Office in J'burg. William did take on the surname HANKS at some stage.

Harold & Agnes had 3 daughters in South Africa during their time there, born in Johannesburg and Durban.  They also had a son Herbert Harry Edgar who died at age 11

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hope this helps
