Monaghan families in Ireland
« on: Wednesday 16 April 14 23:49 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm a Monaghan and have reached a brick wall - again - with my ancestral research.  I've had pretty good success researching my mom's ancestors but my dad's are another story.  It took me 3 years to find the given name of my great great grandmother's first husband.  Anyway I finally found their marriage record at the Maryland State Archives.  We knew he was a Monaghan, but that was all but at least now we have his first name.  We know nothing at all about him, where in Ireland he came from or how he died (though I suspect he died during the American Civil War).

So, my great great grandfather was Daniel G. Monaghan, born in Ireland (don't know where) about 1841.  I don't know when he emigrated to the United States, but he married Elizabeth McLaughlin on 12 Dec 1859 in Baltimore, Maryland, USA.  Elizabeth McLaughlin was the daughter of Joseph McLaughlin (b. 1810 Ireland; d. 1860 Baltimore, Maryland) and Rebecca Cruse (b. 1822 Maryland; d. 1895 Baltimore, Maryland).  Elizabeth was born about 1841 in Baltimore, Maryland. Daniel and Elizabeth had one son, Charles Patrick Monaghan, born 14 Jan 1862 in Baltimore, Maryland.  Daniel is out of the picture by 1864, presumably dead, and Elizabeth remarries to Henry Clay Fisher on 28 Aug 1865 -- no issue.

Charles Patrick Monaghan (1862-1922) married Maria Louisa Joseph Bryan (b. 1865 QA Co., MD; d. 1957 Baltimore, MD) on 27 Dec 1886 in Queenstown, Queen Anne's County, Maryland at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church.  They had Joseph Daniel Monaghan (1897 Baltimore, MD; 1964 Perth Amboy, New Jersey, USA) and Mary Bryan Monaghan (1906 Baltimore, MD; 1966 Parsippany, New Jersey, USA).

Thus far I have found only one passenger list for the port of Baltimore showing a Daniel Monaghan (any spelling) -- assuming that he entered the USA via Baltimore.  Anyway, a Daniel Monaghan arrived in Baltimore aboard the ship Alexander on 29 Aug 1853 at the age of 12.  He was traveling with the following people:  Patrick Monaghan age 49 [b. abt 1804], Margaret age 19 [b. abt. 1853], James age 14 [b. abt. 1839].  It looks like Patrick was traveling with his children, no wife.  I have no proof that the Daniel Monaghan traveling in this group is my Daniel.

My brother had his DNA tested and we are of the Y-DNA haplogroup R-M269.  If there are any other Monaghans out there in Ireland whose family history includes a Daniel Monaghan that emigrated to the USA before 1859 and/or whose Y-DNA haplogroup is R-MS69, please let me know.

Thanks,
Cathy Monaghan

Hi

Take a look at this site.

http://www.ask.com/wiki/Monaghan_%28surname%29?o=2802&qsrc=999&ad=doubleDown&an=apn&ap=ask.com

Hi,

Unfortunately there isn't anything on that web page that I don't already know about.

Thanks,
Cathy Monagahan

Through diligent research by myself and a professional with ProGenealogists I now have a little more information regarding my Monaghan ancestors.

We still can't get any further back than Daniel G. Monaghan.  But now we know that his name is actually Daniel J. Monaghan, the "J" standing for Joseph.  He was born about 1840 in Ireland.  Where in Ireland?  We do not know.

12-Year old Daniel arrived in in the USA, via the Port of Baltimore, Maryland, aboard the sailing vessel Alexander on 29 Aug 1853 with his family:

Patrick Monaghan age 49 [b. abt 1804], Margaret age 49 [b. abt. 1804], James age 14 [b. abt. 1839].  His older sister Anastasia [b. abt. 1835] emigrated to America at an earlier date.

Anastasia married Patrick Reilly in Baltimore on 18 Aug 1857 at St. John the Evangelist RC Church.  The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Dwight E. Lyman and was witnessed by Hugh Lee and Jane Flanagan.

Daniel married Elizabeth Unity McLaughlin in Baltimore on 12 Dec 1859 at St. John the Evangelist RC Church.  The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Dwight E. Lyman and was witnessed by David Hayes and Hannah Graham.  They had one son, Charles Patrick Monaghan, who was born in Baltimore on 14 Jan 1861.  He is my great grandfather.

Daniel died on 5 Apr 1863 in Alexandria, Virginia during the American Civil War.  According to his death notice, which appeared in both the The Sun (Baltimore) and The Alexandria Gazette, he resided at 159 East Street, Baltimore, between Ensor and Hillen Streets.

The 1864 Baltimore City Directory shows that his parents, Patrick and Margaret, along with his brother James, all shared a home with the Reilly's at 38 Hillen Street.  After Daniel's death, his widow, Elizabeth moved back in with her parents at 49 East Monument Street.  The East Street, Hillen Street and East Monument Street addresses are all within 5 blocks of each other.

Anastasia Monaghan and Patrick Reilly had the following children, all born in Baltimore:  John J [b. abt 1858], Mary Ann [b. abt. 1859], James P. [b. abt. 1863], Daniel J. [b. abt. 1865], William F. [b. abt. 1867], Elizabeth "Lizzie" [b. abt. 1869], Rebecca Agnes G. [b. abt 1872] and Margaret "Maggie" [b. abt. 1873].

The only one of their children that I've found any real information for is the daughter Rebecca A. G. Reilly.  She married Charles King Cannon on 17 Nov 1890 in Baltimore.  They had three children:  Marie M [b. abt. 1898], Bessie Gertrude [b. abt. 1902] and Charles K., Jr. [b. abt. 1905].

Any additional information concerning these Monaghans or Reillys would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Cathy Monaghan
PS:  Don't forget to get your DNA tested!

Taking in to consideration that Liverpool was the first port of call for many Irish people emigrating to USA - is it possible there may be Monaghan connections in Liverpool as well as USA ?
as an example
go to
http://www.liverpoolhistoryprojects.co.uk/liverpoolrcmarriages/marriages.php
