Isabella/Mary
« on: Tuesday 22 April 14 17:25 BST (UK) »
On a few separate trees on my family I've found records which name relatives as Mary, but on different records the same women are named Isabella.

Was it common for Isabella to change to Mary (or vice versa)? A nickname maybe?

Presumably Ancestry trees?

Which are notorious for errors and inaccuracies! ;D
I have never known Isabella shortened to Mary - it's usual to shorten it to Bella.

Agree with KGarrad.  Suspect these are errors and not facts.

Not unless she was born as Isabella Mary.  Never trust other peoples research - always do your own.  Do these trees offer any documentary proof to support that Isabella and Mary are one and the same person?

The information is from records on scotlandspeople.

For one of them...

On her own marriage certificate she's called Mary, but on her daughters marriage she's named as Isabella (all other information is exact).

This is the second or third separate family which I've found Isabella/Mary crossovers. Just wondered if anyone else had come across the same.

What were her christian name(s) on her own birth record/certificate?  1891 census shows her as Mary aged 30 b Glasgow

If she was born as Isabella Mary - she may have alternated between the 2 christian names on her own and her daughters marriage certs

Good idea, I haven't researched her much because she's only related by marriage. Thanks.

My wife is a granddaughter of Isabella Dias.  The story that was handed down by her mother was that Mary McGill met an untimely death from pneumonia (we believe around 1893?) and Joseph gave his children up for an adoption of sorts.  I found a record indicating that he remarried a Christina Weir in 1907, but I haven't been able to confirm that.
