LOVELL branches
« on: Friday 24 June 05 18:59 BST (UK) »
Aside from the LOVELL names associated with Richard III, or sailed alongside
and likely had a pint or two with Drake, Hawkins and othet Sea Dogs,
the LOVELL and LOVEL names have a long history going back
a few Centuries and more.

By the 1700's they are scattered about from  Dorset to London and beyond.  It is also believed, that the  LOVEL variation like LEE.
HART and SMITH was a popular name for the Romani when they arrived on the shores of Mother England & the Emerald Isle of Ireland.

Discussion from all Branches be it London or Weymouth or Bedford branches.
Zelley,  Lovell, Godbold, Woods, Phillips, Lewis, Emery,

To start this Lovell interest, my family are from Shoreditch and Bethnal Green.
The earliest I have traced is;
Robert Lovell born 31 July 1670 baptised at St Sepulchre. His son Robert born 22 Oct 1715 baptised at St Annes & St Agnes. His son was also Robert born 29 Feb 1760 baptised at St Leonards.
We then had a run of 4 Thomas' before getting to myself.
I would like to find the father of Robert 1670, I think his name may have been John but I cannot prove this

I have a Louisa Lovell born 1812 in London.  She married Daniel Giles born 1806 on 08/10/1832.  She died in 1875, Daniel died in 1891. They had a daughter Matilda in 1848 birth registered in St Pancras.  A recent discovery for me to just learning about the family. Though do know that they were Romany Gypsys.

Will have a look for a Robert in my seaching and will let you know. An unusual name so hopefully not too hard to trace.

Matilda married Stephen Stone on 21/10/1867at the Parish Church, Leytonstone.  Family rumour has it that they were very religious.

Have just checked your Robert Lovell birth on www.familysearch.org and found the parents. See below.

ROBERT LOVELL
   Male

   Birth:
Christening:    31 JUL 1670     St Sepulchre, London, London, England

I tried to find their marriage but found nothing.  I could have been looking in the wrong places as many families travelled quite widely in those days.

Sea Dogs or Romani traders:

I believe, the Romani ones used the LOVEL version of the name.

Would love to know more about my 4x Gt Grandmother who is buried in Wrington, Somerset.  She was a Lovell, sometimes Sarah, sometimes Seale, sometimes Cely.  She was married to Samuel Andrews on May 13 1793 in Wrington.  I don't know where she was born or when but she was buried in 1839. I have a note that she may possibly be from Churchill.
If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them.
thanks, Louise
