St Paul in the Bail Church, Lincoln
« on: Saturday 26 April 14 17:27 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help with my quest. I am trying to find a copy of either a drawing or preferably a photograph of the Lincoln St Paul in the Bail church post 1877 and that was subsequently demolished in 1971.

The information board on the site does have a drawing but it doesn’t photograph very well and the drawing and photo available on Lincs. to the past appear to be of the earlier and smaller church that was built in 1786 and demolished in 1876.

I do hope someone can help as this was the family church and the one my late mother was baptised in.

Many thanks

Is this the right one or the wrong one?

Hello Geoff

Yes that’s the one, where did you find the drawing? I have searched high and low for a picture, even in antique shops hoping to find even an old postcard but to no avail and until today I was surprised that neither the County or City councils took a photo for posterity before it was demolished in 1971.

However this morning I stumbled across the Assembly Rooms web site and they show a photo of the church taken in 1960 and it was from the Lincs to the Past collection, but I can’t seem to find it on there. http://tinyurl.com/lspuup3

Correct me if I am wrong but was the entrance of this the last of five churches to stand on the site at the junction of Westgate and St Pauls Lane? It looks as though the artist was standing/sitting there when he drew the excellent picture.

Once again Geoff many thanks for you priceless help. So many people on Rootschat would still be stumbling around in the dark if it wasn’t for your invaluable knowledge.

I found it on FaceBook.  I think it's a photo (not drawing), note the kids sitting on the wall.  Looks like a photo scanned from a book to me.

Yes Geoff I agree, closer inspection suggests it is an early photograph but it makes no difference it is the Ball, Wheatley & Hicks family church. So many of my family were baptised and married in that church.

Once again many thanks

I've no idea how many churches there have been on the site, I'm a "downhill" person myself. ;)

I usually consult genuki but realise it has errors too http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LIN/Lincoln/lincoln_church_hist.html

Nothing wrong with "downhill folk" Geoff but surely you went to the Assembly Rooms in your youth? As for me I'm a "Missionary"  ;D

Re Lincoln Churches;

my late father in law & mother in law (still with us) were very keen amateur /semi professional photographers who toured Lincolnshire with their cameras. They also made a point of photographing buildings  in Lincoln especially if they were going to be knocked down / changed.
on his death all his church photos ( & a lot of others) were donated to Lincoln library for the enjoyment of all.

just spoken to MIL & will probably be some pics of St Paul in the Bail there.
