There's this one 16 Feb 1874 East Retford Church William Wilkinson and Elizabeth Smith.

I thought that maybe all the children whose christenings I had posted were the children of the above marriage,  but as you already have William and Elizabeth as married on the 1871 census maybe those above are not who you are looking for.

I'm still confused and will see what I can find out when I'm next in the archives.

Hi,

I think that Walter could be William (Fegus William christened 5 May 1881) and as you say Janet could be James.
And I also wonder if William and Elizabeth were not really married on 1871 census.

I thought that it was possible they just hadn't married by 1871.  They were living with William's sister who was also unmarried with a child.

Maybe a child's  birth cert would be the best way to confirm Elizabeth's maiden name

Yes I agree that would be the best thing to do.

Margaret aged 4mths on 1971 census is also a  mystery  cannot find a birth for 1870/71 or a christening and the only birth is sept 1866 Margraret H Wilkinson East Retford Vol page 10.

Maybe the 4 mths should be 4 yrs?

I thought Margaret could have registered as Female Wilkinson in March 1871 and by 1881 they had renamed her as Sarah??

Edit - I wonder if the children were only christened after the couple married

I didn't see that one, yes and she was christened sarah in 1874.

I think you are  right abt the christenings after marriage.  It all makes sense now.

think we cracked it.

Well I'm off now, will post again when been to archives.

bye for now

Hi Moria,

Just to clear things up, how do you know Elizabeth Smith was born in East Retford, according to 1881 census she was born Tuxford which comes under East Retford Reg District and also Tuxford and East Retford are very close to Lincolnshire.  Also apart from place of birth for her (which can be sometimes wrong on census) all the census tie up with children that I gave christenings for.

We think it would be best to get one of the children's birth certificate to be sure of mother's surname.
I wouldn't be so quick to rule out the marriage I gave until then.

P.S this is only my advice it is of cause up to you.

Hi Moria,

Sorry I've checked the marriage of William Wilkinson and Elizabeth Smith and your are right don't think its the one you want.  William is down aged 25yrs a pipe-maker son of Stephen Wilkinson and Elizabeth is 21yrs daughter of James Smith.

I do however still think that the 1881 census and christenings of Children that I posted are still your William & Elizabeth.
