Glanogwen / Llanllechid Churches
« on: Saturday 03 May 14 10:17 BST (UK) »
What was the relation between these two churches ? . I've found a ref on FindMyPast to an ancestor being married at 'Glanogwen', but I'm not aware of there ever being a parish asscociated with the church.

I have had problems with this also. I found records, previously discovered in the record office under Caernarfon, referenced in FindMyPast as Glanogwen. This seems to be a general heading for several parishes.

Seeing as this marriage took place in 1749, it seems to rule out Glanogwen. I've then taken a closer look at some of the other entries, and people are referred to as 'mariners'. The people I'm looking at had a child in 1750 in Llanbeblig, so I strongly suspect that these particular entries are for that parish.
It did rather surprise me when I first saw it.

Hi Huwcyn,

Just a thought - until the mid/late 1800s the boundaries of the Penrhyn estate were constantly 'shifting'. Sometimes parts of Llanllechidd were in Llandygai parish. A problem that thwarted me until I discovered this. On a 1919 OS map there is a cluster of houses named as Ogwen Bank (Glan Ogwen). Across the river there was a church St Ann's. It was built in the 1700s and buried under the quarry slate tips by 1865. No idea were the church records went.

There was definitely an ecclesiastical parish of Llanogwen. Hugh Arthur Jones was its vicar until his death in 1964.
