Completed (with thanks): Cottage Hospital, East Budleigh
« on: Friday 09 May 14 21:00 BST (UK) »
I'm delving into a problem that was identified in a recent newsletter of the Toronto Family History Centre. Was there a cottage hospital for East Budleigh? Where was it and what was the official name for it.

I've looked at limited samples of OS sheets from 1903 to 1977 and don't see a hospital annotated. All the usual functions that an OS map shows have appeared over the years but not the hospital that I can see.

Any thoughts would be well received this side of the Atlantic.
Happy hunting.

Hi

Have just checked the Kelly's Directory for 1914 and while there is no Cottage Hospital listed in EAST BUDLEIGH  in the parish of Budleigh Salterton (which is less than 2 miles from E Budleigh), I found this

" The Cottage Hospital on the East Budleigh Road occupies with its grounds about three-quarters of an acre, given by the late Hon. Mark G K Rolle, it is an edifice of red brick, erected in 1888 at a cost of £900 in commemoration of Queen Victorias Jubilee, has 14 beds and an endowment of £1000 given by the late Rev. James Boucher curate of Littleham and Exmouth."

Hope this helps

claire

EDIT: Looks like it's still there

Claire,
Thank you of the info, most useful.
It would suggest that a search of the 1914 Kelly's directory would indicate a name other than "The Cottage Hospital" if that is the case.

Regards

Hi

1914 Directory just lists name as 'Cottage Hospital' ~ East Budleigh Road

1893 Under 'public establishments' ~ Cottage Hospital, East Budleigh Road

1910 Kelly's directory, as above.

1923 Kelly's directory, same again.

claire

Just checked an old phonebook from 1922 , same again ' Cottage Hospital ' Budleigh Salterton.
