John King born Great Easton 1784
« on: Saturday 10 May 14 08:42 BST (UK) »
Howdy,
The 3rd Great grandfather of my wife was John King born in Great Easton, Leicestshire in 1784.

From Ancestry.com.au

In the 1841 census he is shown at Great Easton with his wife Susannah and 3 childrn with an occupation of 'Ag Lab'.

In 1851  census he is shown with his wife Susannah and daughter Elizabeth (and her child). I cannot make out what his occupation was.

In 1861 census he is shown with his wife Susannah with his occupation as 'Innkeeper' at the 'Shoulder of Mutton' Great Easton. He was age 77.

Can anyone with access to the 1851 make out what his occupation was. Also, I'm thinking at the time it was quite a leap from Agricultural Labourer to Innkeeper. What do you think? Is this a likely scenario or is it possible there are 2 John Kings with a wife Sussanah at Great Easton at that time.

Thanks

Rickey

His occupation in 1851 is Victualler.  I would not consider it unusual to move from Ag lab to this profession,  My Licensed victuallers were Farmers and worked in Mills  ;D

My wife is descended from Jospeh King 1814 -1885 who migrated to Australia in 1853.

There is a baptismal record for John King for 4/12/1785 in Great Easton - parents John and Elizabeth King.

I have not found the marriage for John and Elizabeth but there is a baptismal record of a John King at Great Easton 5/5/1751 with parents John and Sarah King.

That's about all I've got Ian. Hope that helps.

Possible marriage at Bringhurst, next to Great Easton:-

John King married Elizabeth Wade, both of Bringhurst, on 2nd November 1771.
Witnesses - Bailey? Wade and Catherine King.

Elizebath Wade baptised on 18th May 1750 in Great Easton, daughter of Bearly and Ketrine

Bearley Wade and Catherine Freestone, both of Easton Magna (Great Easton) married there on 3rd May 1744

That looks very likely David. There is a Bailey King baptised 4/12/1791 at Great Easton to John and Elizabeth.
