How do I progress?
« on: Saturday 10 May 14 10:56 BST (UK) »
My Grandfather John Richardson Hannam b1893 in Sheffield, died 1943 in Sheffield, began his service in the RFC and then probably transferred to the RAF. apart from the info from the muster roll I have little or no info on his military career, apart from the fact that he finished his service as a "Sergeant mechanic for aircraft  (This may not be the correct term).
Can anyone help with further info or tell me where to find it, I have already tried Ancestry and FindMyPast with no success.
Thanks Steve

Thanks jim

I am sorry but I do not know when he was demobbed. His first child was born Nov 1922 but that is not much to go on.Talking to a relative it appears that he joined the RFC in about 1908, which would be before the RFC formed in May 1912, so it is possible he joined the army first. I was also told that he was wounded by machine gun fire while recovering an aircraft. apart from this I know nothing further.

Hi brianz,

My late Uncle was an Observer Officer in the RFC. (He was transferred there from the Army).

I don't know if you've seen this Site? It tells you more about the RFC generally.

His record is at Kew:

IIRC they are generally very short so it shouldn't cost to much to get them to do a copy for you - though Kew is always well worth a trip.

Thanks newburychap, I have ordered a copy today. I searched the whole of what I thought was the N.A without success, it's quite a confusing place. I spent 2 full days at Kew about 2 years ago It was very interesting and worthwhile.

Thanks again
