Thomas Moore arrived in New York on Jan 5th 1919
« on: Monday 12 May 14 13:25 BST (UK) »
Thomas Moore arrived as a member of  the crew of ss British Isles, on Jan 5th 1919. He might well have gone to aunts: Bridget, Sarah, and/or Mary Moore who were known to been living in the US before 1873.
Any ideas as to where I might look?
He was probably back in Ireland some time after 1922.
Thanks.

Hello,

if he was crew would he not have stayed with the ship?  Have you traced a manifest for the ship? Unfortunately, Ellis Island site is showing a different image  :-\

Hi,
I confirmed the information concerning his arrival in N Y, from the Ancestry site.
I'm sure I had similar info from Ellis Island, which also gave a physical description - not that that would have identified him, of course. He was described as a pump man.
I don't think he would have remained a crewman, but was probably safer going ashore as he was wanted by the police (Special Branch), in Ireland. This was after WW1 and before Irish independence.
I know he returned to settle in Ireland, near Dublin, when it was safe to do so.
Thanks.

I looked at 1920 census on Family Search but then realised that you didn't specify where the aunts were. There are a couple of Thomas Moore, nephew,  :-\ but none to those aunts' names.

Hi,
All I'm sure of is that the aunts were born some time between their parent's marriage in 1845, and their father's mention in his will in 1873, that they were already in America. I don't know if they traveled separately or together, or when they sailed, and where they settled. Presumably, they would have married, and changed names. Possibly someone will recognise the name as ancestors. :)

Thanks for your comments. Perhaps you could delete the "other" post for me, so that people do not duplicate information? I only noticed the forum "immigrants and emigrants" as being more appropriate afterwards. :-[

I have locked the other post and added a link to direct people here.

Is there a reason that you're sure the Thomas on this passenger list is yours?

The "reason" I believe he is "my" Thomas Moore is that he gives the same address in Rathfriland. Co Down.
