1901 Census: Jane Cowin (Née Foster)
« on: Friday 16 May 14 16:17 BST (UK) »
Hey guys,
Had a little downtime today so started looking into my family tree again and I think I've gotten a bit rusty as I'm having trouble with the 1901 Census.
I'm looking into my 3rd Great Grandmother, Jane Cowin (née Foster), born in 1837, in Northumberland.

I've been searching on Ancestry and found 2 entries for a Jane Cowin. One being spelt Cowin & the other being Cowan - I'm struggling to determine which of these is linked to my relative.
Jane Cowan's entry has her birthplace listed as Bolton, Cumberland; completely different to what I had listed for her, but some of the children listed there correspond with what I've found.
However, the entry for Jane Cowin has her sister living with her & a nephew, Richard Cowin, that I've not found, as yet. Annoyingly both Jane's are listed as Head of the household & there's no mention of her husband, George.

Any help or guidance as to how I can ascertain which is the correct census entry, would be much appreciated.

Hi Jackie,

She married George in 1857 in Jarrow. Reference on FreeBMD is 10a 601, if it helps.

Bear with me! I want to follow them through the censuses - because the Jane you found in 1901, with nephew is living in Shropshire! How did they get there?!

Yep, that's them.
I (think) I've found them in 1881, too. Ref: RG11/5021/127/31 - althought what perplexes me is that little Jane is now Isabella.

Aaah!

I can see a Jane Cowen, living in Stowe, Shropshire  in 1881.
She was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and has a husband William?!

So she is the one living in Stowe, Shropshire in 1901 - and she isn't yours ;D

In any case, 1891:
Class: RG12; Piece: 4166; Folio: 146; Page: 28;
37 Chester Street, Jarrow

Cowin, George  Head  M  52  Iron Ship Caulker  b Gilcrock, Cumberland
Cowin, Jane  Wife  F  52  b Corbridge
Nichol, Alexander  Son-in-Law  M  23  Engine Boiler Tender  b Scotland
Cowin, Isabella  Daughter  F  19  b Sunderland
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

You are a star! Thank you so much. Clearly I was missing that vital bit of information.
Now my search starts to find out what happened to George during that census as I think I've found him alive & widowed in 1911, living with Joseph.
