Carroll family, Glasgow
« on: Sunday 18 May 14 15:11 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information I can find on the Carroll family who lived in 33 West Bothwell Street from 1917-around 1930 when they moved to Ruchill.
He was called John (Johnny) O'Carroll but dropped the O when he arrived in Glasgow from Ireland.
She was originally Jane (Jean) McIntosh and was from Hunter Street. Both born around 1895/6.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Have you looked for their marriage on Scotlands People as it will give you both sets of parents names and mothers maiden names.  This will help trace them on the Scottish & Irish 1901 and 1911 censuses

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/   (free to search)

The Scottish 1911 is available on Scotlands People

SP can also be used to search for their respective deaths.  It is not an annual subscription seite - it's pay per view by purchase of credits

Thanks for the help.
 I managed to find their marriage records and found her family on the 1901 Scottish census. Is it at all possible some Irish births weren't registered? When I tried to search (O)Carroll on the 1911 Irish census the only possible one that returned showed them only to have one child when I know for a fact there were 4 brothers.

What year were they married & how old was John when they married?

What were John's parents names on the marriage cert and is any occupation shown for his father?  Are either of them shown as deceased?

Were either of the witnesses surname Carroll/O'Carroll

What were the brothers names and do you know whether they were older or younger than John?

They were married June 1917, he was 21.
His father was Michael Carroll and was a labourer while his mother was Bridget (nee Murphy) and was deceased. (I do know that his father remarried later on)

The witnesses were a John and Mary O'Grady.

His brothers were Robert, Michael and Davey (David). I am unsure of ages but I know Robert was in Mountjoy prison for a time around the time of the Irish civil war.

I wonder if the family were in Scotland by 1911.  I have done a basic search on SP 1911 census and got one match but credits are needed to view the full entry

This is what I input

Surname = Carroll
Forename = John
Second person forename = Michael
Sex = male
Age range = 3 to 7

I also tried using Robert in the Second person forename box and also got one match
