Warnett family of Fletching, Sussex
« on: Sunday 18 May 14 15:20 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have a link, please, to DANIEL WARNET of Fletching who had a relationship with LUCY ALCHORN resulting in the birth of my 3 X great grandfather, William Alchorn (later called Allchin)? He was bpt Fletching 27.05.1810. I cannot find a baptismal entry but have found Daniel's registration for 2 years service with the 33rd Foot Soldiers on 02.05.1811 where he states he was born in Fletching and was 21 years old....ie born abt 1790.

After Daniel's return from his spell with the military he married Ann Cork ( a thread I have seen elsewhere on Roots chat, but I am new to this site and I think the previous post was in 2008!).

At present I am leaning toward his parents being William Warnett and Sarah Simmonds who were in Fletching at the time. It is tempting to just go with this educated guess as I can then go back much more.....but I want to be accurate!

Thanks  :)

Hi

..and welcome to Rootschat  ;D

On familysearch there is this marriage

Daniel WARNET mar. Ann CORK 14 November 1818 Horsted-Keynes, Sussex.

There is also this baptism record

Daniel WARNETT bp. 9 December 1781   Horsted-Keynes, parents: William and Sarah

could this be the one albeit a bit earlier than 1790.

Hi

Given the few miles between Fletching and Horsted Keynes it looks like the family could have moved about, here are other children to the couple, William and Sarah.

Claire, thank you. I can't believe my first post has come up with an answer! My instincts were correct, it seems. This Daniel Warnett bpt 1781 must be the one. He would have therefore been about 28 and Lucy Alchorn about 23 (bpt Laughton in 1786) so it figures. I only had Mary so far as a child of William and Sarah, and had also added Daniel as that made sense to me. I don't know how I could have missed Daniel's baptism in Horsted Keynes. William married Sarah in Fletching in 1780 and they do seem to have moved between these two places quite a lot.

I am so, so chuffed to now be able to confirm all the new info I have been gathering today. I can now add the siblings you kindly detailed for me and hey presto I have another family I can lay claim to.

As a newbie to this site, if you have a mo. can you just tell me how you saw my post so quickly? do you register interests somewhere or do you just randomly search different threads? Do you have any connection to these Warnetts, too?

Huge thanks

Thank you so much, Freespirit1. I shall definitely look at those links. Thank you for your interest and your reply. I need now to regroup and take a step back as many extra strands now present themselves. I don't know how to use a smiley on here, yet, so will just send a :).

The Sussex Marriage Index gives further information on the 1818 marriage.  Daniel Warnet is shown as of Maresfield and Ann Cork of Horsted Keynes.   Witnesses were Sarah Cork and Richard Butcher.    The mention of Maresfield only means at the time of the marriage but worth putting in to the equation.  I believe there was an army camp there.   Have you looked at www.theweald.org  ?   You can spend many a happy hour searching that.
The marriage for William and Sarah shows him as a bricklayer age 24 of Fletching and she is age 23 of Chailey.  They married by Licence.    Sponsors were William himself and William Weston butcher of Maresfield
