Henry Leonard Graham
« on: Wednesday 21 May 14 19:26 BST (UK) »
My gt gt grandfather, Henry Leonard Graham, was born in Brighton in 1860, he married in Brighton in 1886, and in between those dates there is absolutely no trace of him or his unmarried mother Amelia Graham.  I have searched all the usual records to find a trace of him but it is all to no avail.  Has anyone any suggestions please as to what I can try next ?

Hi,

Do you have a copy of his marriage certificate?  Any clues from his occupation?  Could he have been in the Army/Navy?

Did Amelia marry and Henry listed under her married name in any census record?

On his marriage, Henry Leonard was a Sergeant in the 5th Lancers.

Which might explain his absence from the 1881 census?

Just adding links from findings on that link above....I think we are still on the same data really as lots of work and info was collated then.

Possible late christening here https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NDZN-MPV

Mention in that other post about possible military connections and maybe a marriage abroad. There is this entry here https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGV4-HV3 as a possibility. This has been taken into account with the birth in Brighton in late June that year.

There is this death also showing https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FG5P-1TY

I am not making sense of this all so far but given how long you have been looking Diane, I think it is worth considering all the possible angles really.

Other possible children showing for this couple:

Helen Bertha 1863 Madras https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FG4B-T3T
Ethell Minnie 1868 Madras https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGHS-F31... death  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGVR-Z9C

Potentially, either side of these enties would be a Brighton birth for Henry Leonard in June 1860 and an 1869 christening in Lewes.

From previous thread:

Henry Leonard Graham was born on 8 June 1860 and on the birth cert it says under name and surname of father 'unknown Graham', and under maiden name of mother  ' Amelia Graham formerly unknown' and the informant was W Flint, occupier 32 West Hill St, Brighton and the birth was registered '20 July 1860....Is it likely that the Baptism nine years later is the same Henry ?

Thank you for your thoughts on the matter.  I will now persue the leads you have given me. The last baptism in 1869 has been mentioned by several people so I will try to find out a bit more about that.

Diane, I am not 100% on English birth certs. Maybe someone else can comment.... If Henry's birth was illegitimate, would it not be written up as such on his 1860 birth reg I wonder? The wording that you mentioned as showing on his birth cert seemed odd if he was illegitimate (or legitimate really  :-\).
