Hi Rex
I'm not too familiar with researching military records, but following the dates I have for J Russell 10568 entering the war theatre on 12 Oct 1914, I'm thinking it might have been the Battle of Givenchy.  His medal index card uses codes G/104 and G/1/6 in the Roll column - could G signify Givenchy?
J Russell survived the war, but may have been wounded.  The Scotsman04Dec1917 article from the link on your last message is interesting - but where does it say casualty list?

Regards

Tom

As far as I know the entry in the roll column is just the reference to the location of the entry in the medal rolls and nothing to do with any battle.

How to interpret a medal index card.

The 1st Battalion arrived at Marseilles from India on 12 October 1914. http://www.1914-1918.net/seaforth.htm

Scottish newspapers published casualty lists of Scottish soldiers and Scottish regiments. That image is just a part of the daily tally and too big to post the whole. The Glasgow Herald published the same list where you can see the headings, although the quality of the copy isn't nearly as good.

The Derby Telegraph, over three weeks, recently published a story about the experiences of a soldier in the 1st Battalion Seaforth Highlanders.

Hi Rex
Thank you for the various links.  I'm going to the Mitchell Library in Glasgow tomorrow.  I will be able to view on film or original if necessary, and get a reasonable print of the Glasgow Herald page.
