Searching for Moran Family Members
« on: Friday 23 May 14 23:50 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I am stuck in tracing my lineage and would be forever grateful any help that can be provided. It seems to me like I have very little information but here goes:

Grandfather: James Michael Moran born 1JUL1922-Jan1987(Youngest I am told of 11 Brothers and Sisters)
Brothers Names I know: Michael, Danny, Denis?
Sisters Name I know: Sister Mary Enda(I met her when I was around 10 and she was a Catholic Missionary in Kenya, Had to be over 6'Tall)
Locations I recall him(James Michael Moran) mentioning he was from: Cohb, Dingle, Kerry, Waterford. He left from Dublin in 1947 for NY City and ended up in Springfield, MA married Veronica Deegan. Had 7 children(Laura, Joanne, Maryenda, Patricia, Kimberly, Jane and James)

Legends/Stories he told:
- I had cousins who were pretty good Irish Gaelic footballers(don't remember names).
- There's a story of his father and two others fishing, the boat toppled, two of the men died, and his father stayed alive by holding onto one of the oars. The oar supposedly hangs in the house where they lived, a thatched cottage.

Again, any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!!!

I can see three possibilities for a James Moran travelling to NY in that timeframe, two in 1947, but funnily enough the one I'm slightly more comfortable with arrived in NY in March 1948, a 25 year old labourer born and last resident in Dingle, the son of John Moran of Lateeve Beg, Ballyferriter.  James was going to see his brother John Moran living in Rockaway Beach NY.

There are plenty of Moran births registered at Dingle, for example this James:

A Denis:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FB15-2JQ

A Daniel (in this one, mother's maiden name is given as Lynch):

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F135-FYC

But Moran is a really common name and in truth, this is flimsy idle speculation. Hopefully someone will find the breakthrough piece of the puzzle to definitively identify your Morans.

Also just to add that there is Moran family at Lateeve Beg in the 1911 census:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Kerry/Marhin/Lateeve_Beg/282678/

Looking for a marriage in the area for the son and daughter-in-law in the census record, I came across the following possibility (note the wife's surname Lynch in the context of the mother's  maiden name in the Daniel Moran birth record previously posted):

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FY8S-N22

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FY83-CJW

All simply worth noting for the moment, until you have firmer information on which to rule the Lateeve Beg Morans in or out.

There is a bit about a St.Enda Moran here could it be the same woman
Ursuline St. an tSiúr Eanna Ní Mhoráin (Sr. Enda Moran) of Ballyferriter Parish died at the age of 96 in Thurles on 28th September last. She had been a teacher in the Secondary School there and, at the age of 63, she went to join the Ursulines who were working in Kenya. She finally returned from Kenya to Thurles in 1994 but never forgot the experience she had at a time when most people would want to take life easy.

Wow! Talk about fast help. Thanks so much to you both for your efforts.

gaffy - Life is amazing. You are correct about James coming over in 1948 and was a laborer. I have the passenger doc and I had typed the year wrong. The part that amazes me is you bringing up his brother John he was going to visit. That triggered my memory of meeting John when I was really young and I remember my grandfather always bringing up his brother John. Where did you get that part of the story from? And I think you are right on needing more information to confirm the correct Moran family. I actually have a message out to my Uncle Jamie who may be able to assist. For now I will keep your suggestions to see if I can use them to make any connections on my own. THANK YOU!!

Sinann - That is 100% my Grand Aunt. I rec'd other confirmation last night that the year she passed was 2010 and she was born in 1914. Thank you so much. This is very helpful to me and also something nice to share with some of my family here in the states.

I can't thank you both enough. Not only have you helped me in my quest but also you have triggered some happy memories of my childhood.

The ship's passenger list provides that detail under a column "Whether going to join a relative or friend...", if you haven't already checked, there is a second page to the passenger list that provides that, his father's details, and other information.
