1841 Census lookup
« on: Monday 26 May 14 04:44 BST (UK) »
Hi there hoping a new set of eyes can help me cause I am going bonkers!  ??? :-X

Looking for the census (1841) to hopefully find their children and them.... Just can't see them....

John Ellis born 1778 in bury St Edmunds,  married Susan Holden in 1807 in Stonham Aspal. Had one child I know of William Ellis, born 1814 in Hopton but he will not be on the census as he got married in Scotland in 1836 was a soldier in 96th Regt. He died here in New Zealand.

Could anyone even find children or/and marriages for them??  A big ask I know!!

thanks

Janine

PS Sorry forgot to say John died in 1865 and Susan in 1880 - pretty sure they are right but awaiting confirmation on deaths for them.

Hi

You mention John died 1865 & Susan 1880

I found these 2 burials on the Suffolk Burial Index - dates/info don't exactly tie in with your couple.

John Ellis buried 12 Jan 1865 (age 73) Bury St Edmunds Cemetery

Susan Ellis (Spinster age 83) buried 20 Feb 1880 Bury St Edmunds Cemetery.

I did find this one which is interesting
John ELLIS age 43 of Hopton buried 18 July 1819 Hopton All Saints (near Thetford).  Might explain why there are no more children to be found.  No Susan Ellis buried Hopton so possible she moved away/remarried.

Only Susan Ellis (Widow) marriage I could find after that date is this one
Susan Ellis (Wd) m William Barrell 27 May 1823 Ipswich St Clement.  Poss buried 6 Jun 1865 age 78, Ipswich Cemetery.

Hope someone can check out 1851/1861 CRs for you & see where this Susan was born etc.

K

I was about to post, not only could I not find anything in 1841, but nothing found either in 1851, 1861 (John & Susan) or 1871 (Susan) and was going to ask if the deaths you had mentioned were in England ? But I think Keziah2 may have  cracked the case  and that your Susannah was widowed then married again to: William BARRELL ;D

If John & Susannah married 1807  and son William ELLIS born 1814, I'd have thought there was a chance of their being children born before William…..looks like there was at least a daughter, Mary Ann ELLIS  and I think she married a Daniel LONG in 1829:

CENSUS 1841: Lower Barclay St, Ipswich St Margaret, Suffolk
HO107 / Piece 1043 / Folio 14 / Pg22
William BARRELL 50,  Mariner - Y
Susan BARRELL 50 - Y
(the marriage of Widow Susan ELLIS to William BARRELL would hopefully confirm he was a mariner and that this is likely the correct Census)

CENSUS 1841:  St Helen's St,  Ipswich St Helen, Suffolk

Hi there

Oh wow - no wonder I could not find them in the census!!  Crikey sorry about that! it was giving me a headache too!  :-[

Thank you so much for that. The marriage is correct and i also would have thought that there would have been kids before William...hmmm will have to do more trolling through some parish records etc.

Thank you for your help with it all.  VERY much appreciated  - you are both angels  :-* :-* ;D 8)
