Have to see what Kaye thinks of all this.

As an aside, I went to one of the two prep schools in Slough in the 1950's. I thought Slough was a dump. Not so, it was a quiet little town. Decent civilised people. Originally a coaching town on the Bath Road (A4). First change came with the coming of the railways c1840. GWR east-west axis London to Bristol and thence to New York, railway and Brunel's steam ships. There was and is a branch line down to Windsor. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert must have used it often.

The Herschel family lived there in Windsor Road. William had the 40' telescope with which he discovered Uranus. A frequent visitor was King George III. The family was still there in the 1950's. They've gone now and the house demolished.

Charles Dickens installed his mistress, an actress, somewhere in Slough.

Hi Kaye

I doubt they would have buried him without a certificate and his coffin was likely held in a mortuary within the hospital part of the workhouse.

Have you got the 1841 census entry?  8 daughters!! By heavens I'm glad I didn't keep trying  ;D

Of interest to you I think will be the holdings of the institutions letters etc (link from the workhouse site given by Regorian) I would contact the historical society to see if they have anything.  They must have contacted the daughter you're trying to find and something must have been committed to paper either a letter or in the workhouse minutes, possibly both.
