Apologies for the lack of cropping on the picture below. Photobucket normally lets me do this, but seems to be difficult today. Ah well, I'm sure it won't be a problem for you geniuses!

Although the photo's in pretty good nick, it does lack rather in the contrast department. I'm hoping to get some idea of what William really looked like, so maybe a head and shoulders crop, as well as a more normal crop, would help a little with this? Many thanks in advance to anyone who helps me get an idea of what his face was really like behind that tremendous beard!

I've cropped out William's head and shoulders if anyone's able to do any work with just that aspect of the picture...?

I can't do much with it as it is not a good copy. I think you will find it is not all beard, the bushes blend with it on his right side, if you balance the two sides of the face, it looks something like this

The first scan is a very low 72 dpi . The cropped one is 96dpi and very pixilated making it very difficult to see the details in the face.

If you have the original can you rescan at 300dpi

Sadly not. It's taken me fourteen years of asking to get hold of them at even this quality!!

They were scanned at a post office somewhere in rural Ireland, I believe. Hence the dpi issue?

btw, I'd expect the cropped photo to be the same dpi as the fuller picture - they are from the same original jpg file...
