Can someone check this baptism please?
« on: Saturday 31 May 14 18:06 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have recently found what looks to be the baptismal record of my great great great grandfather, Frederick John Edwothy in Wolborough St Mary, Devon in 1854.

Anyway could somebody please help me by checking if this baptism lists his parents? By the way, I purchased his marriage record which lists his father as Frederick Edworthy, a deceased sailor in 1872.

Thanks,

Ryan :)

I think that the reason the link was removed is that you are not allowed to ask for look ups from subscription web sites.  Their terms & conditions do not allow this.

Okay thanks for that Rosie. I won't say the name of the site then but I was alerted by an email saying they'd released new Devon records- hopefully other sites have too but I can't find any free baptism records for Frederick Edworthy, 1854, Wolborough in Devon.

I had some great help from a few users and have been told that Frederick John Edworthy was baptised on the 21st April 1854 in Newton Abbott, which agrees with the censuses. No father is listed but mother is Sarah Edworthy, abode Union House in Newton Abbott. I wonder was that her married surname or was Frederick illegitimate so took his mother's maiden name?

I'd like to find out more. Might turn out that Edworthy isn't his father's surname but his marriage cert of 1872 lists his father as Frederick Edworthy, deceased sailor.

Frederick John was a sailor too so maybe he made up his father's details as they are identical to his own (excluding the 'John').

Thanks,

Ryan :)

The BT 164/10/69 that STG found might give some more information.

I would think it is most likely he is illegitimate, I would expect some mention of his father on the christening even if it was only as an occupation for Sarah eg Sailors wife. :-\  You really need to find him on the next census.

I can't see a marriage for Frederick snr to Sarah or his death,  Who were the witnesses on Frederick John's marriage

Your best bet to find out whether he was illegitimate is to send for his birth certificate and see if a father was listed on this.

SANDERS    James

Ok thanks for the replies. I will get that document from the link if I get a chance soon.

Rosie, when you say the birth does not appear to be registered does that mean there would be no birth certificate?

Those marriages look promising but I can't find Frederick John in the early censuses....  ???
