Richard Lawrence, St Keverne, Cornwall
« on: Thursday 05 June 14 09:54 BST (UK) »
Hi Rootschatters,

Could somebody please verify for me a death index for Richard Lawrence.

I have looked on freebdm & FindMyPast the only entry I could find was 1870 4Qtr, Vol 5C, P 19
County Cornwall, District Launceston.

My problem is I have been given a death date of 25 Aug 1869, St Kevernes, Cornwall. I cannot find a closer entry in the Death index.  I was seeking to verify the information I had been given so I could purchase the cert.

Thanks Crowsfeet

Hi Osprey

Many thanks. Yes that is the right Richard. I now have the OPC burial you gave the link for and can go ahead to get the proof.

I can see the date I was given has been a transcription error in the date. Easy to misread a 6 for an 8.

You have made my day
Crowsfeet.

Hi,
I have more questions.

Richard Lawrence (variable spellings) mar twice
[1] Elizabeth Tonkin - St Cadoc, Trevithin, Monmouthshire, 21 Feb 1846
1851 Census this family in Vellenoweth, Ludgvan  1917/176
Elizabeth dies 1851 of smallpox post vaccination along with newborn baby son Richard William

[2] Catherine Penberthy  - Ludgvan Parish Church, 18 Nov 1852
1861 Census this family in Newtown Ludgvan, (Lawerance spelling) 1587/93

1871 Census Catherine Lawrence & children Carvassowe Ludgvan, 2330/32
Catherine lists herself as married & wife.

     Cannot find Richard

Royal Cornwall Gazette, 14 Nov 1867, Page 4, Col 1. Headed 'County Distress'
Catherine Lawrence was paid 12 pounds half of the costs to assist emigration

Catherine & daughters emigrate to NZ 14 May 1873 on ship Colombus. Her son later arrives NZ post marriage.

I cannot find Richard. although he clearly went where there was work.

If he died in 1889 where to look for him 1871 & 1881 - Would appreciate help with finding Richard through these years

Any help much appreciated
Thanks Crowsfeet.

Hi all

Would he have gone to Canada or America for a time due to awful economic conditions before returning to Cornwall?

Catherine Lawrence married twice more in NZ and died there in 1911.

I'm not sure that the Richard in St Keverne is yours. There's a Richard Lawrance born St Martin aged 35 living there in 1861 with wife Eliza & children ref RG9/1573 folio 74 pg 8, same family 1871 in Manaccan RG10/2305 folio 19 pg 6 & 1881 RG11/2324 folio 17 pg 2. Wife Eliza is a widow on the 1891 census RG12/1841 folio 41 pg 15.

Thank you Osprey.
Reluctant as I am to give up a relative who died in church, I have had misgivings about the dates. I have two independent people in my family with trees who have conflicting information about Richard after 1861.

I think Richard may have died between 1861 - 1871, which is why I was trying to find a death registration within that time frame.

The Lower Downs Baptism you gave me the link for is the right one as William Lawrence, Richard's father married twice. His 1st wife was Jennefer Bryant and his 2nd was Jane Mitchell.

One of the problems I have is trying to sort out the distance between places/parishes in Cornwall.

I am very grateful for your time and energy. Thank you.
Regards Crowsfeet

this map of Cornwall parishes may help

http://www.cornwall-opc.org/MAPS/parish_map.pdf

Where did William marry Jane Mitchell? I can see baptisms in St Hilary to William & Jennifer/Jane, but the names are used interchangeably in Cornwall. The son born in 1841, baptised in 1845, is son of William & Jennifer.

Hi Osprey
Thank you for the excellent map link. I shall study it with interest.

2nd marriage info. I don't have a copy of this but a fellow researcher had a copy which I saw a number of years ago. I didn't think of getting a photocopy at the time.
