Sussex marriage look up please - 1916
« on: Thursday 05 June 14 17:34 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Not sure if it's too late in terms of marriage ..

I'm stuck on Edward Henry who married Dorothy Alice Maylam (I have Dorothy's parentage). I've no idea who were Edward's parents

They married in 1916, Hastings East Sussex, they had 3 children (1 in Maidstone, Kent and 2 in Hastings).

Can anyone help me in finding Edward's parents please?

Thanks,

T

A copy of the marriage cert will hopefully give you his fathers name and occupation -

Marriage
Oct/Nov/Dec 1916
Hastings
ref 2b 40
Edward Henry /Dorothy A Maylam

Certs can be ordered from www.gro.gov.uk

If you know when he died, and his age at death, ( or alternatively just know when he was born!) you may be able to find some possibilities for him on 1911 census (sorry look ups for that census not allowed).

Oops sorry,

I since obtained the marriage cert.. It didnt help me more.

Edward Henry aged 39 a Lay Reader lived in Barming Heath which tallies on 1911 Census in Barming, Kent

His father was Edward Henry - deseased was recorded in the occupation section.

The 1881 Census of Edward with parents Edward & Helen was incorrect due to mistranscription, it was Drury sadly.

In 1911 Census he stated born in Holy Trinity, Stoke Newington, Surrey

He's the person I wanted to trace back, he died in 1958, Hastings Sussex and thats about it.

Thanks in advance

Marriage cert has told you he was born about 1877 and that Dad was also called Edward Henry.

FreeBMD has no one with the surname Henry born in the Stoke Newington district anywhere near the birth year you have given.
FreeBMD only has one Edward Henry born anywhere in Surrey between 1876 and 1878, and he was born in St Saviour district (Southwark) London.   If Edward HENRY was his real name, the 1881 census with that revised birthplace seems the logical place to start.

Stoke Newington was in Middlesex (Islington/Hackney border), and the parish is not Holy Trinity.

So it is likely that an error was made by the householder filling in the 1911 form, and that the birthplace was supposed to be Holy Trinity, Newington - in Southwark, Surrey (as opposed to Stoke Newington).
