Just had a look at the 1881 census for CLERKENWELL MIDDLESEX London

I've been wondering about this family :

1901

James WIFFEN b 1840 Littleport . Cambs
Claris Emma HENRY sister , single , b 1842 Littleport
Edward HENRY nephew b 1878 London

address Littleport

1891

James WIFFEN b1840 Littleport
C E WIFFEN sister , widow b 1842 Littleport
Edward HENRY nephew b 1878 London

address Littleport

1881

Claris Emma BYSOUTH b 1842 Littleport Florist's wife
Edward Henry BYSOUTH son b1878 NEWINGTON
Emma Bysouth dau b 1880 Lambeth

address 65 Commercial Road , Lambeth

Claris Emma Wiffen , Bysouth , Henry appears to have been registered as Clarissama Wiffen Dec 1841 Ely v 14 p 56. Emma Bysouth seems to have died shortly after the 1881 census. Given the relatively unusual name and the birthplace , Littleport , I think Claris Emma is Claris Emma Wiffen. I cannot find a marriage to Bysouth but he may not exist.

I Wrote:
FreeBMD only has one Edward Henry born anywhere in Surrey between 1876 and 1879, and he was born in 1877 in the St Saviour district (Southwark) London.

There was another born in the St Pancras district the same year, but no others in the London area.  The 4 others born during that period were all born well away from London. (Neath, Wigan, Prescott and Hartlepool).  Have you thought of applying for a copy of either of the two London based birth certificates?

FreeBMD does not list any infant deaths for an Edward Henry before 1881, so theoretically, the 1881 census should contain 6 entries for children of about the right age.  So you could also try to see which might have been yours on that or later censuses by the process of elimination.

Hedging your bets, the 1901 census index has a William E HENDRY) born Stoke Newington of the right age, living in Battersea with his parents or a parent.   Another to check out.

I'm sorry guys, I never knew I had more replies - I get no notifications of it.

Many thanks for your help, gives me enough to follow on. As for Witness, well.. If I can remember where I filed the cert !! I'll get back to you on that one.

Might have to buy few certs to get on with it BUT with Edward snr listed as deceased with no occupation is going to be a killer.

Many thanks to you all who have tried to help

I just realised something.. Their daughter was called Dorothy Clarissa Henry, that might be the clue? Forget getting my eyes checked out.. Rather have my brain checked out - it didn't incurred me of the name.

Off to bang myself against the wall..

OK got the birth cert..

You've guessed it right...

Father, Edward Henry - Fruit & Flower Salesman
Mother, Claris Emma Henry formerly Wiffen

i'm guessing they put Edward snr as father to hide the fact its really Henry BYSOUTH.

Would they have bastardly order or something for Henry? If so, how does 1 get the info on it please?

Thanks,
