Identifying places in Cavan
« on: Friday 06 June 14 13:27 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help with some place names which were taken from marriage records. I am not too sure if spellings are correct. I would like to know whereabouts these places are in Cavan :-
Claudaugh
Gradane
Kilnavar

Many thanks.

Claudagh is probably Cladagh, as in the river in County Cavan - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_Cladagh_(Swanlinbar), or possibly Cavanagh - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavanagh_(townland).

Kilnavar could be http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilnaleck or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilnacreeva.

What date are the marriage records from?

Here are my guesses:

- "Claudaugh" is the townland of Claddagh in the civil parish of Castlerahan;

- "Gradane" is the townland of Graddum in the civil parish of Crosserlough;

- "Kilnavar" is either the townland of Kilnavar in the civil parish of Lavey or the townland of Kilnavara in the civil parish of Urney.

Without more information, it's impossible to be more definitive.

Thank you for your replies. Marriage records from Presbyterian church Ballyjamesduff  1850 for Claudaugh and Gradane.

Record for Kilnavar from Presbyterian church at Bellasis 1879.

Thought I'd try out this new site, to be honest it's a bit annoying but got a result for Kilnavar.
OS map sheet number 26 Barony Loughtee Upper Parish Lavey District Electoral Division Cuttragh.
