MONK family MIDHURST/FERNHURST & CHARLWOOD
« on: Sunday 08 June 14 06:36 BST (UK) »
My paternal grandmother Nellie Monk was born in 1879 in Midhurst, Fernhurst ... She was one of a large farming family of Monk children and was farmed out to a childless Aunt Ginny (?) & Uncle (?) who lived in Charlwood. She was maypole queen one year in Charlwood (?). And became a school teacher of sorts before emigrating to South to marry my grandfather in Durban in 1910. I wish to find out more of her family history. She was very close to two sisters (?) Mercy (?) and Daisy (?) I think - though I can't find the latter names in the census records.

There is a birth of an Esther Mercy Monk in the Mar Qtr 1888  of the Westbourne Reg District which could well be her sister Mercy

Have you found Henry & his wife Jane that were living with the family in 1881 on later census. I wondered if 'Jane' could be Ginny

Rosie,
Struggling to find him on any other census :(
Why do you think his wife is Ginny?

An interesting site which has references to the Monk family http://grandma-p-ramblings.blogspot.co.uk/2006/09/charlwood-pathways-and-ancestors.html
