St Cuthbert's Church, North Shields: CAMPBELL baptisms 1897-1910

I'm trying to unlock the mystery of the 1911 census entry for Richard Gillow and Mary Ellen CAMPBELL of North Shields. They were married in 1897 and by the time of the census she had delivered nine children - of whom eight died in infancy.

There is a partial transcription of some of the infant baptisms on familysearch - but for some reason many of the names have been rendered into latin. The father is referred to as Richardi; the mother Maria Helena - and the children as (for instance) Jacobus  Gulielmus Campbell (I presume James William)

Is this the way the infants would have been recorded in these registers? Does anyone have access to - or have knowledge of the whereabouts of the St Cuthbert baptism (and possibly burial) registers for dates between 1897 and 1911? I have:

Margaret Ann (b 1897 d 1898)
Barbara (b 1899)
Ann (b 1901 d 1901)
Mary Ellen (b 1902 d 1904)
James William (b 1907 d bef 1911)

I would like to fill in the remaining four. I'm also wondering if these children all died of the same condition.

A couple more possible children from familysearch deaths, Margarita Anna and  Anna's burials took place at Preston, there are these 2 children also buried at Preston

Georgius Campbell aged 1 died 25 Aug 1898 North Shields buried 28 Aug 1898 Preston
Robertus Campbell aged 0 died 16 Nov 1900 North Shields buried 19 Nov 1900 Preston

Many thanks - continues to add to my story. I never cease to be amazed by the trials and tribulations of families at the turn of the 20th century.

I know of two more children of this family born after 1912 bringing the total up to 11 births - 10 infant deaths (the first born of the surviving daughter also died in infancy!)

Mary Ellen Campbell had a sister who had 9 children - 6 of which had died in their early years by 1915.

In contrast, Mary Ellen's brother had 10 known children of which 8 lived to adulthood.

Tragic though high infant mortality might be, I wonder what the implications would have been for this county one hundred years on had all these children lived, the two world wars hadn't taken place and there had been no 1918 'flu epidemic. Doesn't bear thinking about!

Hi. I think I've replied to you before on a different topic, but I'm doing research into St Cuthbert's School and Church, and yes, the early records are at the Tyne & Wear Archive. If you are quite patient and methodical you could probably chase the family through the records from baptism and through school, wedding and death if the family were Catholic and stayed in the area. The index of baptisms for 1847 to 1939 are on microfiche, C/NS14/2/ vols 1-5, and yes, the earlier ones are in Latin, but fairly basic and easy to understand. Marriage and death records are also in the C/NS14--- range, so once youv'e found one the others are easy. Contact me if you can't get to the archives and need some info--- I might already have it or know where to put my hands on it quickly.
