David Rattery Caird British subject St. German, France
« on: Saturday 14 June 14 13:06 BST (UK) »
Hi Everybody,
I am trying to find a David Rattery Caird birth certificate for a British subject born in St. German/Germain France 1851 and cannot seem to find a link for getting them.
Or for getting any British Subjects born in France or married.
Any help to which web site I could look at would be helpful.

Regards

Hello and Welcome.
We're here to help
Not an expert on French registration but I believe it is localized and you have to go directly to the area that he was born. The Town hall there will have all the records and you need to apply to the Mayor..
Alternatively if you just want his parents, online family trees give them as James  Caird and Elizabeth Skinner.
David's marriage 7.2.1870 Dundee and death 27.3.1913 Kirkcaldy should also give his parents and would be on Scotspeople.
Hope that helps

Online trees also give his date of birth as 19th June 1851?
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

The problem is that there are multiple places by the name of Saint-Germaine.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_French_communes_of_Saint-Germain

There are two places to look:

1) Records of British subjects overseas who registered bmds at the local consulate.  For Scotland I think this would be the "minor records" available at ScotlandsPeople
2) Records held locally.  While it is possible to go through the Mairie (town hall) and ask for a copy, I always look for the Departmental archives (like a county archives), many of which have put records online.

Hi ciderdrinker,
                      Thanks for your reply.
I have all the information for his parents, to whom he was married to and all their family, siblings etc.
But thought I could access some records something like scotlandspeople but over in France without actually having to go over to France.

 - ah, someone else was looking for him back in 2008 and managed to find his birth certificate, apparently  in Saint-Germain-de-Livet which is in Calvados

Calavdos archives now have many records online:
http://archives.numerisees.calvados.fr/cg14v3/accueil.php

Unfortunately they are also one of the few departments who charge for access to their bmds.

Hi jorose,
Very new to this site and don't know the ins and outs yet.
I thank you again for that url
Is it possible yourself could search the birth certificate for me as you know I have no knowledge
of French I would pay any charges involved.
Or the name of the person who  searched before for the birth certificate as that person is likely
to be connected to the Caird family as I am
Thanks again
