I don't think there is a place called Braidwood in Northumberland.

However, there is a place called Braidwood in Illinois, U.S.A.

If you look at the original census form there is some writing which has been erased after the word Braidwood, and it could well read 'Ill. U.S.A.'  :-\

I agree it looks like ill usa has been rubbed out by someone and Northumberland was written in by a clerk in the census office extracting birth places. Unfortunately we can't post attachments to this board.

Hi I found a relative who had also been born Braidwood Illinois and I was directed to an article about the movement of miners over there from England - and back again in some cases. If you google British Coal Miners : A demographic study of Braidwood by Amyz Gottlieb, you may find some interesting reading - can't post link I'm afraid.
I found it very odd that out of a family, only one had been born over there but when you realise how they were prepared to travel for work and a 'better' life, I suppose it was inevitable that children would be born there, here, on the way there or on the way back!!
