William Wadsworth, Cotton waste dealer
« on: Tuesday 17 June 14 09:28 BST (UK) »
Hi
Can anyone help please, looking for William Wadsworth cotton waste dealer, and family
I have a Mary Jane Wadsworth married William Thomas Fouchard 26 Sept 1874 at St Andrews Manchester, I cannot find anything on Mary before her marriage although she does say she was born in Scotland, I have dismissed this as there is no Mary Jane with father William to be found in Scotland
On the marriage certificate Mary's father William is a cotton waste dealer
Just recently I found in the London Gazette 20 Feb 1858 the bankruptcy of Joan Harrison and William Wadsworth, Salford, cotton waste dealers
I cannot find this William on census, his marriage or anything else around Salford, Manchester area
Not being on Ancestry or Find My Past at the moment my search is very limited and trying to find anything on Family Search is mind boggling
Thank you
EddieW

Hi Aulus
No that would make her 26 when married in 1874 but she was only 18.
She was born about 1855 so not in census until 1861
Thanks for helping though
Eddie

Ah, assumed you had no dates for any of them as you didn't mention any apart from the Fouchard marriage, which I'd assumed must have just said "full age" for bride and groom.

If the marriage register says 18, then that's probably to be believed.  (I always reckon it was easier for god-fearing folk as most were then to tell fibs to a census enumerator than a vicar).  In any case, I've usually found that minors (below the age of 21) usually added a few years on, to take them beyond needing parental consent.

The family I found are in Radcliffe in 1861, but without their Mary Jane.

There's a Mary Wadsworth (daughter of William & Grace) born c. 1853 in Spotland, on the 1871 census in Whitworth, but no idea if that fits your criteria.

Do you want to tell us what else you know and what records you've ruled out, so we don't go up blind alleys?

This doesn't find Mary Jane or William Wadsworth --- it's just a snippet. According to the Preston Chronicle of 20th February 1858 - this states 'Bankrupt Annulled' for William Wadsworth and John Harrison.

I may have found John Harrison, for what that's worth!! In 1861 there is a Jonathan Harrison, Retired Cotton Waste Dealer, aged 63 in Mossley, Ashton under Lyne. I wonder if that is him -- haven't checked him backwards yet -- I suppose I was hoping that William Wadsworth may be somewhere nearby.

I also wonder if Harrison and Wadsworth, Cotton Waste Dealers, may just be in a Trade Directory of the time.

Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

According to Family Search, there is a baptism of a Mary Jane Wadswoth on 11 July 1858 at Manchester Cathedral -- father, William Wadsworth. Unfortunately there is no image against that entry, so we cannot tell what the father's occupation is.

There is an image for the marriage -- and Mary Jane's address at the time of her marriage looks like 'Baird St' -- but it isn't that clear. Her groom lived in the same street. Town not given, but possibly Manchester. Might be worth checking the 1871 census.

Hello
Yes Ciderdrinker that is Mary Jane  and I have all info and census of her and William Thomas and family from 1874 on
That looks very much like William Wadsworth's partner although it is spelt JoAn on the page I downloaded
I have that baptism at Manchester Cathedral and it is as close as I have got but nothing to confirm it is my Mary Jane, but not discarded yet, my family have never been the Cathedral type of people but there is always a first
Mary J and William T both gave their address as Baird St but no number so could they have been living together at this time, usually if the people live in the same street they give a number which proves they do not live together
In 1871 William T is living with Archibald McClinton at 16 Nuns Sq Manchester

However this is diverting from my first request, looking for William Wadsworth cotton waste dealer, I only listed the marriage to show the link of the two
He must have carried on as cotton waste dealer for Mary J to put him on her marriage certificate as one in 1874
As with you Pennine I thought he would still be in the Salford area as Mary J got married at St Andrews Manchester
Where was he in 1851, he could have been single then if Mary J was his first child
